Brisbane Floods 2011 Deadly Wave due to hit (The aftermath)

Brisbane’s flood might not have reached 1974 levels, but 67 suburbs have suffered major damage in what Queensland’s Premier says resembles a post-war zone. The Brisbane River peaked this morning at a lower-than-expected 4.46 metres, inundating more than 20000 homes and businesses across the capital. More than 100000 homes are without power across the city and to the west in Ipswich. The official death toll from the Queensland floods remains at 15. Police have established a 200 officer task squad against looters to keep Brisbane streets safe during the massive flood clean up, the squad will be boosted by 100 police officers paired from interstate police services. Traffic across Brisbane is congested, with many major roads still closed or down to one lane. Traffic lights are out at many intersections throughout the city, with police directing traffic. Telecommunications across the state are in disarray and Telstra says it will take months to completely repair their infrastructure. Floods have disrupted landline, mobile and cable services. Some 13 tugs and Water Police guided sections of the Riverwalk safely under the Gateway Bridge and down the river after it started breaking away from the New Farm bank last night. The 850m-long, 5.5m-wide piece of infrastructure, built about 12 years ago for $17 million, began breaking off its pylons about 11pm. The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has ramped up its efforts in the Queensland flood response. There are now 19 helicopters
